A unique birds of prey show in the Hohenwerfen Castle

Introduction

Hohenwerfen Castle is a beautiful 900 year old fortress situated in the Pongau region, south of Salzburg. Considered being one of the most beautiful fortresses from Austria, it was one of your half day activities we did, while spending three days in Alpendorf village, along with another half day activity close by, which is the Liechtenstein gorge. A full day activity in the region would be a hike such as the Schuhflicker hike which gets you in the top of the mountains.

Getting there

There is a free parking lot right before the entrance which can be made via a funicular lift or by taking several stairs which might take you around half an hour since there is a lot to climb.

Attractions

One of the most impressive attractions from the Hohenwerfen Castle is the show with the birds of prey, where you can see eagles, vultures, falcons, and other smaller birds attacking as instructed by the trainers, several times while flying around the castle. In addition, there are several exhibitions, incorporating local history and legends,  and a full introspective into the how the fortress was commenced and what role it played in the course of time in the region.

The castle is closed during wintertime, so please check the opening hours, pricing for specific activities and much more on their website. The tickets are including or excluding the lift with the funicular, as well as the many other activities you can do, and we bought them online so we can directly enter once there. On the website here you will also see all options that you get which each ticket, which in 2022 cost between 10.40 – 16.90 euro / person, depending on all the options you want. For children, they vary between 3.10 – 5.70 euro.

The restaurant has a stylish indoor serving where you can enjoy a delicious meal in a medieval atmosphere, as you will see in the pictures below.
