Chiang Mai is the biggest city from the northern region of Thailand. It is also very close to some of the highest mountains from the region, so you can do lots of hiking, as we did and also kayaking on some rivers. The city is very nice, it has a squared central area where you can find a lot of attractions and also book nearby trips, to surrounding areas. In Chiang Mai you have the famous night markets where you can find and bargain on almost everything, including tasty and various food. We also went to see a natural elephant reservation, where they keep the elephants in their natural habitat, up in the woods, as you will see in the pictures below. There is also a long neck tribe you can visit, where the women are established in a small village, for touristic purpose, where they work and they also get a share of the visiting fees you are paying to see them.
We also booked a trip to Chang Rai, where we visited the temples and then we crossed the Mekong River for a short visit to Laos. We also went on the Golden Triangle, at the intersection of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar where there is a no man’s piece of land, that doesn’t belong to anyone, where the Mekong and Ruak rivers meet. In the Chang Rai region you can also visit the famous temples, there are lots of them. Be aware that some of the famous ones, such as the White Temple, original name Wat Rong Khun, were build for purely touristic scope, these are just touristic attractions and not the real temples. Initially the area was in need of generating more income and they designed these temples for attracting more tourists. All in all, northern Thailand has a great story waiting to be discovered, there are a lot of things you can choose from to do. From here we went to Phuket, for another great adventure, and you can see the pictures from Phuket here.
