Introduction
We chose the Wirzweli Hexenweg because it is more than an ordinary forest walk. The trail combines nature, imagination and small adventure stations, making it especially enjoyable for families with young children.
The walk follows the story of Witch Lizi through a peaceful landscape of forests, meadows and mountain views. Although the route is easy, it is worth allowing extra time because children will want to stop at each station and try the activities.
Starting the trail
The adventure begins in Wirzweli. From there, take the six-person gondola to Gummenalp, where the Hexenweg starts at an altitude of approximately 1,559 metres.
After leaving the gondola, follow the signs for the Hexenweg. The trail initially passes through open alpine meadows before entering the forest. The route is mostly downhill, making it manageable for children, although sturdy shoes are still recommended.

The witch stations
Along the trail, children can discover witch-related stories, wooden installations and playful challenges. Depending on the station, activities may include:
- Sitting on a giant broom.
- Throwing pine cones.
- Exploring wooden structures.
- Looking for clues in the forest.
- Learning about herbs and nature.
- Playing in small witch-themed areas.
The activities break up the walk and give children a reason to keep moving. Adults can enjoy the peaceful forest, mountain scenery and occasional views across the surrounding landscape.
The walk back to Wirzweli
The trail gradually descends from Gummenalp towards Wirzweli. The path can be uneven and lumpy in places, so it is not suitable for pushchairs.
Once you reach Wirzweli, you can visit the playground, enjoy the summer toboggan run or stop for refreshments. A picnic and barbecue area is also available along the route.

Practical tips
- Check the gondola operating times before starting.
- Allow 1.5 hours or longer if your children want to try every activity.
- Wear shoes suitable for dirt and forest paths.
- Bring water and a small snack.
- Do not take a stroller; use a child carrier for younger children.
- The route is best enjoyed in dry weather.
- Combine the Hexenweg with the Wirzweli playground or summer toboggan run.
- If you want a longer walk, consider the Wetterhexenweg, which takes approximately 1.5–2 hours and includes more uphill walking.
Conclusion
The Wirzweli Hexenweg is a lovely family excursion in central Switzerland. The trail is short and easy, but the witch stations turn it into an engaging adventure rather than just a walk through the forest.
For families with children aged four and above, it offers a good balance of movement, imagination and nature. The gondola ride, downhill route and playful stations make it a memorable half-day activity near Lucerne and Engelberg.
