Introduction
We visited the Wili Wichtel Adventure Trail because it offers a fun way to explore the countryside above Lake Hallwil. The trail is centred around Wili Wichtel, a friendly forest character who accompanies children through the woods and introduces them to the local landscape.
The route is not a difficult mountain hike. Instead, it is a relaxed family walk with enough activities to keep children interested while adults can enjoy the views over the Seetal and Hallwilersee.
Starting at Homberg
The trail begins at the car park opposite Restaurant Homberg. From here, follow the signs for the Wili Wichtel Adventure Trail.
The route leads through forest and open countryside, with occasional views towards Lake Hallwil, nearby villages and the surrounding hills. The terrain is generally easy, but some sections pass over roots, stones and uneven forest paths.
Because of these sections, the full Wili-Weg is not suitable for standard pushchairs. Families with younger children should consider using a child carrier.

The interactive stations
There are 11 interactive stations along the Wili-Weg. Each station contains a small activity, information panel or playful challenge connected with the Wichtel story and the natural environment.
Children can climb, balance, search, observe and solve simple tasks as they walk. The stations provide regular reasons to stop, making the approximately 4.6-kilometre route feel like an adventure rather than an ordinary forest walk. [little-roamer]
The trail works best when taken at a relaxed pace. Depending on how long children spend at each station, the walk can easily take longer than the estimated two hours.
Homberg observation tower
The route finishes at the Homberg observation tower. From the top, you can enjoy a wide view across the Seetal, Lake Hallwil and the surrounding countryside.
The tower is also a good place for a break. There are benches and picnic possibilities nearby, making it easy to bring lunch or a snack and stay a little longer before returning to the starting point.
The shorter Wilma-Weg
Families with toddlers or pushchairs can choose the shorter Wilma-Weg instead. This route is approximately 1.2 kilometres long, takes around 20 minutes and leads from Restaurant Homberg to the observation tower.
It includes three interactive stations and is designed to be pushchair-friendly. The Wilma-Weg is a good alternative if the full trail is too long or the children are still very young.
Practical tips
- Park at the designated area near Restaurant Homberg.
- Wear shoes suitable for forest paths.
- Use a child carrier rather than a standard stroller on the full Wili-Weg.
- Bring water and a picnic for the observation tower.
- Allow extra time for children to use all 11 stations.
- Check the weather before starting, as some paths can become muddy.
- Combine the walk with a meal at Restaurant Homberg.
- Choose the Wilma-Weg if you are travelling with toddlers or a pushchair.
- Respect the forest, wildlife and private land along the route.
Conclusion
The Wili Wichtel Adventure Trail is a lovely family excursion above Lake Hallwil. Its combination of interactive stations, forest scenery and panoramic views makes it suitable for children who may not yet enjoy a conventional hike.
The full Wili-Weg offers a satisfying two-hour adventure, while the shorter Wilma-Weg provides an easy alternative for younger children and pushchair users. Together, these routes make Homberg a worthwhile destination for a relaxed family outing in the Aargau Seetal.
