Grosser Mythen Hike: a steep climb with spectacular views

The hike to Grosser Mythen is one of the most impressive short summit hikes in central Switzerland. The trail is steep and exposed in places, but the panoramic views from the 1,898-metre summit make the effort worthwhile.

Summary hike details

Start/end location: Holzegg
Destination: Grosser Mythen summit
Ascent/descent: Approximately 500 m
Distance: Approximately 3.5–4 km
Duration: Around 3–4 hours return
Technical requirements: T3 mountain hiking trail
Physical requirements: Medium to demanding
Season: Usually mid-May/early June until October, depending on conditions

Introduction

We chose the Grosser Mythen hike because it offers a real summit experience without requiring a full-day expedition. From a distance, the mountain looks like a sharply pointed rock rising above Schwyz, and the final climb is every bit as impressive as its appearance suggests.

The hike begins at Holzegg. From there, the trail climbs directly towards the summit through 47 steep switchbacks, you will see the numbers along the way, also in some of out pictures below. The path is well maintained and secured with chains in exposed sections, but it still requires concentration, sure-footedness and a good head for heights. We saw too many small children on this hike and people in sport shoes, which is not recommended.

The ascent

The first part of the trail leads across alpine terrain before becoming noticeably steeper. As you climb higher, the views open up over Schwyz, Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and the surrounding mountains.

The trail is not especially long, but the steep incline makes it physically demanding. Short breaks are useful, particularly at the stone bench known as the “steinerne Bänkli”, located around the middle of the route.

Near the summit, the path becomes more exposed and rocky. The chains provide additional support, but hikers should move carefully and leave enough space for people travelling in both directions.

The summit

Reaching the summit feels like a real achievement. At the top, a small mountain restaurant and summit cross welcome hikers, and the 360-degree panorama is the main reward.

On a clear day, you can see numerous lakes, valleys and Alpine peaks. The contrast between the steep limestone summit and the green landscape below makes Grosser Mythen particularly attractive for photography.

Take some time at the top to enjoy the views, but remember that the descent can be just as demanding as the ascent.

Practical tips

  • Check the weather and trail status before starting.
  • Wear proper hiking shoes with good grip.
  • Do not attempt the summit trail in rain, ice or poor visibility.
  • Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours for the ascent from Holzegg.
  • Use the chains carefully on exposed sections.
  • Start early to avoid crowds and strong afternoon heat.
  • The trail is not suitable for strollers or inexperienced young children.
  • Bring water and a small snack, even if the summit restaurant is open.
  • Treat the route as a mountain hike, not as an ordinary sightseeing walk.

Conclusion

The Grosser Mythen hike is short but demanding. The steep trail, exposed sections and chains make it more challenging than its distance suggests, but the spectacular summit panorama makes it one of the most rewarding hikes near Schwyz.

If you are looking for a compact mountain adventure with impressive views, Grosser Mythen is an excellent choice—provided the weather is stable and you are comfortable on steep mountain paths.
