Beautiful day at the Natural History Museum in Zurich

Natural History Museum Zurich

The Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich is a hidden gem for a relaxed but fascinating visit, blending zoology and paleontology on the scenic Irchel campus.

Overview

This free museum unites the Zoological and Paleontological collections under one roof at Karl-Schmid-Strasse 4, showcasing over 1,500 specimens from tiny insects and Swiss wildlife to massive whales, Ice Age mammals, and Triassic marine reptiles.  Opening times are Tuesday – Sunday, between 10-17 and it’s closed on Mondays. The museum it’s family-friendly with interactive sounds, touch stations and QR codes.

Getting to the Natural History Museum

By public transport – if you leave from Zürich HB, take trams 6, 9 or 10 to ETH/Universitätsspital, then a short walk to Karl-Schmid-Strasse 4.

By car – you can park just outside the building (free on Sundays) or in the Parking USZ, Gloriastrasse 19, 8006 Zürich – paid parking across the main street.

Zoology highlights

Wander habitats mimicking Swiss Alps, forests, and global ecosystems, spotting mounted deer, foxes, kangaroos, and wombats in lifelike poses. You can listen to real bird songs, whale calls, and insect chirps via headphones; you can also look through magnifiers at spider hairs or ant jaws; and you can see the immersive “Orsa’s World” Ice Age exhibit with models, lighting, and glacial sounds.

Paleontology stars

Shift to deep time with stunning fossils from UNESCO site Monte San Giorgio – such as 240-million-year-old ichthyosaurs, fishes, and reptiles alongside regional Alps and North American finds. The life-sized reconstructions and panels trace the evolution, including early human ancestors like Homo erectus, while connecting ancient bones to modern life.

Tips for families and short visits

The museum is ideal for kids because it has low-level displays, touchable furs, short films. And the Sunday workshops keep it lively without overwhelming. Non-German speakers thrive on visuals and English QR/tours.

For the entire visit, you can plan 1-2 hours, and maybe something extra you want to pair your trip it with a campus visit or a Polybahn ride for the full afternoon.
