Introduction
We visited the Aare Gorge because it offers an exciting combination of nature, adventure and family entertainment. The gorge is narrow, dramatic and surprisingly easy to explore, thanks to the walkways built along the rock walls.
Instead of simply walking from one entrance to the other, children can take part in the Tatzelwurm clue hunt. The story is based on the legendary Alpine creature that is said to live in the gorge.

Walking through the gorge
The Aare Gorge stretches between Meiringen and Innertkirchen. In some places, the limestone walls rise approximately 200 metres above the river, creating a spectacular natural corridor.
The route follows secure footbridges, metal walkways and tunnels cut into the rock. Below, the Aare rushes through the narrow gorge in bright turquoise and blue-green colours.
The atmosphere changes as you walk. Some sections are open and bright, while others are dark, cool and enclosed by rock. This contrast makes the experience interesting for children and adults alike.
The Tatzelwurm clue hunt
At the entrance, ask for the Tatzelwurm activity card. Children then search for hidden figures and answer questions along the route.
The clues introduce the Tatzelwurm family, including Tatzi and his friend Citronella. Children need to observe their surroundings and find the correct answers as they move through the gorge.
Once the card is complete, it can be placed in the wooden box at the end of the route for the prize draw. The activity gives children an additional goal and helps keep them motivated throughout the walk.
Family facilities
The west entrance near Meiringen has a children’s playground, making it a useful place to begin or finish the visit. There are also picnic opportunities and areas where you can take a break after walking through the gorge.
The path is well secured and suitable for families, but some sections are narrow. A small, narrow pushchair may be possible in parts of the gorge, although a child carrier is usually more convenient for very young children.
Practical tips
- Ask for the Tatzelwurm clue card before entering.
